President Barrow urges judiciary to maintain resolute in delivering justice

President Adama Barrow has urged the judiciary to maintain a resolute independent in delivering justice and facilitate good governance and the rule of law.

President Barrow was speaking during the opening of 2022 legal year held at the High Court complex in Banjul, saying despite the deadly coronavirus pandemic judiciary continued to dispense justice within the ambit of law.

“The global pandemic has not stopped our judiciary from dispensing justice as required by law bearing in mind that the rule of law is the bedrock of society, my government continues to support the country’s judiciary to sustain a healthy and stable democracy. We maintain that the judiciary must maintain a resolute independent and strong enough to facilitate good governance and the rule of law,” he said.

“On this occasion we come together to celebrate the heroes of the judicial system to continue to work courageously administer justice and enrich our law system together we have successfully laid the foundations in the areas of good governance respect for human rights rule of law to develop and extend,” he added.

According to him, TRRC was formed to investigate and provide a fair and accurate historical record of the human rights violation committed in the country from July 1994 to January 2017 to help establish the truth commission to promote accountability, legal justice, media reconciliation and reparations.

“TRRC accorded the victim the opportunity to relay their experience and provided a platform for offenders to confess and repent hoping this will bring about healing to unite the nation. The TRRC completed its findings and submitted its report to me on 25th November 2021; a whitepaper will be released within six months from submission date to outline the government’s position on the Commission’s findings and recommendations,” he stated.

He therefore urged Gambians to exercise patient as his government continue to review the report to take suitable action to ensure that the never again mantra is not only a saying in The Gambia.
