By Karimatou Jallow

Truck drivers in Banjul have called the authorities responsible to help cover gutters in Banjul with slabs to prevent often accidents in some areas in the city.

The drivers complained that the open drainages are enhancing accidents that are occurring in some areas where they have some of the open gutters but can be prevented if these gutters are cover with slabs.

Lamin Njie called on government to assist in covering them with slabs because leaving it open is not healthy for the wellbeing of the people

“The government should try and cover the gutters because it is filling with unhygienic water and one can easily get infection which is not good for health,” he said.

Ebrima Jaiteh, a driver said: “this is the place where we spend the whole day, so dumping rubbish into the gutters will affect us however, if they covered the gutters, it will be better because we cannot be praying or sitting around unhygienic environment.”

“If they help us and cover these gutters it will be very favourable to those in this area and we also urging the people to stop dumping rubbish into the gutters as the government is doing its own part,”Ousman Trawally appealed to the residents.

“These gutters were not like this before however this place is now used for dumping of rubbish which is why the water is not moving to the right direction. It is frustrating to us because this water is not hygienic and we can easily get infection from it,” he added

“The uncovering of this gutters are not save because we are facing many challenges around this area however many people have fell into the gutters simply because they are not aware of it in some areas here. Animals are also falling inside that too is another challenge because to pull them out there is need to enter and the water in the gutters is not hygiene,” an anonymous driver explained.
