Penda Bah says Gambia can overturn eight goal deficit against Cameroon in Banjul

By Arfang M.S. Camara

Penda Bah, Captain of The Gambia women’s national team has stated that it is possible for The Gambia to create a surprise and overturn an eight goal deficit when they host the indomitable lionesses of Cameroon in the return leg of the AWCON qualifiers in Banjul on Wednesday.

The Queen Scorpions of the Gambia were battered 8-0 by the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon during the first leg of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers in Yaoundé on Friday.

“It is possible. I will never give up. Football is funny. Cameroon is our senior ladies, not even us but the entire Africa. I have colleagues with the Cameroon team that I play with at club level. So I think we are going back home, to rectify our mistakes,” Penda Bah said after the game on Friday.

“At least if we cannot have everything possible, we would not allow what happened today to repeat itself. I think we learned perfectly from our mistakes and will continue from there,” she added.

The Gambia women’s national team who is ranked 121 in the World Ranking could not withstand one of Africa’s best but captain Penda is not giving up on the tie despite the eight goal deficit during the first leg.

Penda Bah is one of the four Foreign based players who came to reinforce The Gambian side, alongside Haleema Hamilton Froiland, Adama Tamba and Ida Mbye. But unfortunately they failed in front of a star studded Cameroonian side ranked second best in the continent.

Penda Bah plays professional football for Dinamo-Minsk in Belarus, alongside Cameroonian midfielder Claudia Dabda.

Gambia’s hopes of a maiden ticket for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) scheduled for Morocco later this year now seems all but over except one of the greatest comebacks in football history is needed when both sides meet on Wednesday in Banjul.
