Gunjur FC was on Saturday crowned champions of the 2021/2022 Kombo South District Football tournament after defeating Banyaka FC 3-1 in a well-contested final officiated by an all-female panel of referees and played at the Sanyang football field.
The Coastal Town boys and the Banyaka boys made a stunning start to the match with some goal scoring opportunities.
Banyaka opened the scoring through Captain Malick Bojang in the 44th minute of the first half with a brilliant header.
Gunjur responded quickly for an equaliser and crafted some goal chances but failed to capitalise on their limited opportunities before going for the break thus the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Banyaka.
Gunjur resumed the second half to continue from where they stopped in the first half to pile more pressure on Banyaka’s defense line as prolific striker Sheriffo Bojang scored a brace to level and also put his side ahead.
Sheriffo Bojang scored his first goal of the match in the 55th minute of the second half to cancel Malick Bojang’s 44th minute opener.
Sheriffo Bojang netted the second goal for Gunjur in the 85th minute of the match before Ousman J. Janneh scored the third goal for Gunjur in the dying minute.
As the champions, Gunjur went home with a giant trophy, medals and a cash of D45, 000, while Banyaka received D35, 000 and medals as runners-up.
Gunjur net-minder Muhammed Touray received a pair of gloves as the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Kartong Folonko’s skipper Sanna Jassey received a trophy as the best player of the championship.
Gunjur striker Sheriffo Bojang received a pair of football boots as the leading goal scorer of the tournament.
