A group of Gambian men and women with disabilities have detailed frustration and sufferings which they are facing in the country and therefore called for more consideration and supports from the government and ordinary Gambians.
Ramou Jeng, lamented of the high cost of wheelchairs, adding they have not been receiving support from the government since 2017.
“We the disable people are suffering here because now if you need a wheelchair, you will ask to pay D5,000.00 and we don’t have money to buy it.” she said.
Muhammed Jallow, who also uses wheelchair, lashed out at the commercial drivers for discriminating them on the roads by refusing to carry them in their cars.
“The taxi drivers don’t want to take us. They say we waste their times so they always decide to pass us anytime we stop them,” he said.
“Disability is not easy we are faced with different challenges in the roads and in different places. So if you don’t have a wheelchair, you cannot go anywhere or place of your choice, but with wheelchair you can,” he added.
He therefore called on the government to support people with disability in order to ease their burdens in the society. “We are all thankful to Christ and his wife and his family. We don’t pay anything for these wheelchairs and we are appreciative.
