Modou Ibrahim Cham fondly known as MC Cham Jnr of GDC, who is contesting for the Jeshwang constituency National Assembly seat, has promised to champion a fight against rampant corruption in the country.
Speaking to reporters shortly after filing his nomination documents to the Independent Electoral Commission in Kairaba Avenue on Monday, he said his main priority areas will be on education, youth and women empowerment, health and security, saying he is backed by the whole Gambia.
“The reasons why I am contesting is very simply, is for betterment of every Gambian. My first priority is to be a champion of collective fight against rampant corruption,” he said.
According to him, the country needs a strong opposition in the National Assembly to ensure the ruling government is hold to account, but added if the National People’s Party dominate the National Assembly it will be detrimental to the country.
“My priority is more on education, health and security in this country and the living conditions of Gambians. Right now, everybody is suffering in this country. If you look since 2017, President Barrow’s government doesn’t have a proper checking from the National Assembly and a government without a proper checking is very dangerous government,” he added.
Meanwhile, he expressed optimism in emerging victorious in April parliamentary elections for Jeshwang, emphasising that the whole Gambia is behind his candidature.
He added: “my candidature is for the whole Gambia and if you look at my crowd, I have a very established committee who are working both day and night to make sure I win the seat. (This) is not about Gambia Democratic Congress but (is) about the entire Gambia that is behind me.”
“I am supported by the president of the party because he believes that nation development is my priority that enables him to work with me,” he said.
MC Cham Jnr’s candidature is also supported by a breakaway group of the former ruling party, APRC, who supported his party during the December presidential election. The breakaway group also put up candidates as independents in the Fonis and Brikama and Latrikunda Sabiji for the upcoming National Assembly elections due in April.
