The Gambia Drug Law Enforcement Agency (GDLEA) has detained 8 people for been in possession of suspected prohibited drugs.
“Ebrima Marr and Dodou Badjan were clutched at the Barra Ferry Terminal with eleven 9110 parcels of suspected cannabis sativa on the 25th February 2022 around 13: 13 hours GMT onward. Joseph Mendy was also arrested on the same day at the same location with two (2) parcels of suspected cannabis,” the Anti-Drug agency stated.
According to the agency: “similarly officers in West Coast region arrested one Sargina Mendy in Brikama Bojang Kunda with eleven (11) parcels of suspected cannabis and one (1) stone of hashish. And one Omar Kambai was also arrest with eight (8) big bundles of suspected cannabis sativa at Bullock checkpoint.”
“Baba Jobe and Omar Cham were nabbed in the Kanifing Municipality with three (3) wraps and ten (10) parcels respectively of suspected cannabis sativa. Cherno Omar Boye was apprehended at Old Jeshwang with ten (10) pieces of cannabis sativa and twenty-four (24) stones of hashish” said the DLEAG,” it added.
It continued that: “in a separate development, “drug law enforcement agency in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) partnered with the University of The Gambia student union organised a daylong session on drug awareness as part of the event marking the commemoration of the student week at Tendaba, Lower River Region on 26th February 2022.”
During the commemoration “Presentations were cantered on what are drugs, types of drugs, classifications, routes of administration, legal and health implications of drugs and we believe this will sink in the minds of the students to stay away from Drugs.”
“Thanks and appreciation to staff and management of the school for giving us the opportunity to interact and share ideas on the effects of illicit drug trafficking, drug abuse and related matters with the students. Students were opportune to ask questions to clear their doubts on the misconceptions of drugs and its implications.”
