Two Gambian students who returned from war-torn Ukraine have thanked the government for providing accommodation, means of subsistence, and facilitating their safe return home.
Amadou Bah and Sering Mass Laye were evacuated from Ukraine to Slovakia before boarding Turkish Airline to Banjul.
Amadou Bah thanked the Government of The Gambia through the Mission in Brussels for providing accommodation, means of subsistence, and facilitating their safe return home.
“We thank the Gambian population at large, the Government and a special thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Gambian Embassy in Brussels. They have done a great job. It was very hard in Ukraine but thank God we were evacuated nicely,” he said.
Principal Assistant Secretary, at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr. Papa Sanneh was also at the airport to welcome the evacuees from Ukraine.
The Director of Diaspora and Migration Directorate under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Musa Camara was at the airport to welcome Mr. Bah, and Mr. Laye. Director Camara dwelled on the assistance the Embassy in Brussels accorded to the Gambians when they were in need. He thanked the Mission for assisting the Gambian students by giving them guidance on safety zones, transportation networks, and border crossing points and to come home.
The Ministry said the decision to return to The Gambia or make alternative arrangements is an individual prerogative which shall be respected by the Embassy in Brussels and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This offer shall only be provided to those who request for it.
“A total of Forty-Four (44) Gambians have been successfully evacuated from Ukraine, most of them using the Polish borders and Slovakian. Among this number were Mr. Amadou Bah, and Mr. Sering Mass Laye who accepted The Gambia Government’s offer to be further evacuated to The Gambia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported
