Kanifing Municipal Council has been urged to build a new market in a bid to cater for people to run their businesses.
The call comes as people complained of no enough space within the Serrekunda market to accommodate traders and others willing to do business in the market, as hundreds of people are seeing hanging around the market and roadsides risking their lives and businesses 24/7.
“We are not comfortable to sell in or along the roadsides anything can happen to us, vehicles pass here every second and day this can cause accident at any time. But we have no other option than risking it to sell we have families to take care of,” Bintou Jarju said.
“The market is very small to contain lots of traders, a major reason that you will see us standing on the high way to sell our commodities. This is not safe because different vehicles pass and can easily cause accident,” she explained.
Madam Jarju appealed to the government to help them with a suitable market because it is the only place they depend in earning their livelihood.
“By right we should not sell on the highway but we have no choice than to do so because we have problems to solve, families to take care of, so how can one expect us to sit like this because the market is full. Government should help us with suitable market where we can sit and sell without much challenges because this is the only place we are depending on, we really need help,” Fatou Sanneh said.
However, these traders are all appealing to government to construct a fitting market that can accommodate large traders especially that the population is growing.
