The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has called on candidates for April National Assembly to respect election Code of Conduct.
Speaking during a signing ceremony held at the Sir Dawda International Conference Centre, Alieu Momar Njai said: “Each and every Candidate has an obligation to contribute meaningfully towards the achievement of the peace for this country.
“There is an Election Code on campaign ethics which is embedded in the Electoral Laws of The Gambia. As such, all Candidates are required to fully comply with its provisions during elections. Its compliance was also part of the Nomination criteria for each and every candidate during nomination of candidates for the 2022 National Assembly Elections.”
“The Code on Election Campaign Ethics seeks to deliver peaceful, free and fair elections. Most candidates had observed its requirements in past election cycles. I expect such compliance to be replicated during this National Assembly Elections.
“The Commission calls on all candidates to adhere to these very important Codes once again. International IDEA has been playing a pivotal role towards this end. It registered numerous successes in the past Presidential Election as it created a cordial environment for all political candidates in The Gambia. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the tireless sacrifices played by International IDEA, Dr. Chambas and other members of the Committee of Eminent Persons,” he added.
“International IDEA has been very pivotal in the successful conduct of this election cycle. This makes International IDEA a key building-block in not only the democratic process of The Gambia but also as a key peace building pillar for this country.
In conclusion, the IEC wishes to assure all candidates of its readiness to fully collaborate with International IDEA and all other stakeholders to deliver free, fair, credible and transparent elections to The Gambian electorate,” he expressed his wishes.
