The government through the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation will introduce new tariffs on commercial vehicles in bid to help ease the burden of fare hike in the country.
Today, the Ministry of Transportation will launch a new road licensing scheme targeting commercial vehicles with ten seats. The scheme seeks to help address flouting of traffic rules by drivers and it will allow registered vehicles for the scheme to ply on their designated roads.
Omar Ceesay, President of the Gambia Transport Union, urged drivers to rush and get their vehicles registered for the scheme with the police, adding any driver who fails to comply will be denied plying on the roads.
This started on 4 April and any driver who fails to register for this new license will face the consequences because they will not be allowed to ply on the roads, he said.
“And we have agreed to begin our new tariff of transportation fees on the same day and any driver who doesn’t have this permit, any driver who wants to benefit from this scheme must get the permit and once it started a driver will not benefit from the new tariff and you will not have access to ply on the roads,” he noted
He repeated that once again the scheme targets commercial vehicles with ten passenger seats and above. So, they said military officials will be around car parks to register the vehicles.
