The National Assembly election on Saturday was marred and battered by low turnout suspected on dissatisfaction of voters against the government for not doing much to address their plights especially rising cost of basic commodities.
Speaking to Isatou Cham, a resident of Sukuta said: “the 2022 National Assembly turnout is very low compared to previous years, I think the people are disappointed about the Presidential elections due to that reason many people did not come out to vote.”
Awa Jatta also a resident of Sukuta said: “I want to tell the Gambians that this election is also important as that of the presidential elections. We should all come out and cast our votes so that we can select our representative at the assembly.
“I urge the Gambians to also have interest in the parliamentary elections adding that if you look at it is the most key election because they decide for us as they are the one to represent us at the National Assembly. They make good laws that guide our democracy so if we don’t have interest in that even the presidential elections are not necessary,” Momodou Cham said
“I think people are not willing to vote it is because of the Ramadan and also some of the NAMs forgot about the people who voted for them due to that people are reluctant to cast their votes.
“The beauty of the voter card is to vote and have voice in your country, but considering the fact that our members only come out if elections are fast approaching it means that they are only interested in the votes not people. This year’s turnout will be a great lesson to them I hope next parliamentary election majority will not repeat the same issue,” Isatou Ceesay said.
