AlmamyTaal, spokesman for United Democratic Party (UDP), has said that the past parliament was nearly a ‘rubberstamp agency’, but with diverse candidates in the upcoming parliament will make a different.
Speaking to The Voice newspaper, he said: “We can expect from the UDP parliamentarians that a progressive agenda would be proposed to all members of the Assembly including women empowerment, a revival of the constitutional reform process. But more comprehensively law reforms that cannot wait for the constitution or the propagation of the constitution considering all the issues that were raised around it.”
“Past parliament was nearly a rubber stamp agency. We hope the diversity of candidates inside parliament this time around will be able to provide us the opportunity to work and make sure that we put in place legislation that is going to get The Gambia working again in the right direction. UDP is going to open doors to the independent, and also make sure that the laws are effective and empowering in the National Assembly.
“Nation building is the responsibility of everybody whether is civil society, media, community or religious leaders we hope that everybody takes their part. Also, all the institutions that are set up to help our governance to make sure that our republic is a genuinely democrat public. All this institution must be a fit for purpose they must also add value to the quality of life for Gambians, and add value to the economic activity that is in The Gambia,” he added.
“So, our effort in this parliament will be to continuously empower Gambians and Gambian businesses, Gambians communities, and Gambian families,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said it is satisfactory to have this kind of victory, the victory of the people because it is the Gambia citizens who choose to participate in their elections this way and to send this clear to the present government.
So, “we will engage everybody on the progressive part to make sure that this country moves in the right direction.”
