Ebrima Jallow, Director of Standardization at The Gambia Standard Bureau has outlined the importance of standardization saying it will help the government to limit the number of goods that are imported into the country.
The Gambia Standard Bureau was established by act of parliament in 2010 as the National Standard body to standardize methods and products produced or consumed in the country.
Among other functions of the bureau include implementation of the national quality policy and to improve the quality culture of the citizens to raise awareness, information sharing and training.
Mr Ebrima Jallow who was speaking at the inauguration of the new Technical Committee ceremony held at Senegambia Beach Hotel last Thursday disclosed that the inaugurated new Technical Committee (TC) is meant to develop standard in the priority sectors and also serve as the mirror committee for chemicals on ECOWAS technical harmonization on chemical products and International Organizations Standardization (ISO).
Meanwhile, he said their marketers face a lot of challenges with ministries hence it is always difficult to get the right person on board.
For visibility, he noted that the bureau has outsourced its social media platform while he highlighted three divisions that help in their operation this include standardization body the confirmation assessment which help in the inspection, testing and certification based on the public standard and the other is the metrology division who responsible for all industrial and scientific metrology of the country.
Bai Bittaye, project coordinator at the Gambia Standard Bureau revealed that they had a small-scale agreement with the United Nation Environment of Program (UNEP) to come up with a study, adding that, as a country their mandate is to align their standard with that of the ECOWAS
