The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has launched a drug free club in some schools across the country to strengthening DLEAG’s initiative to combat illicit drugs in schools and society in general.
The launching of the clubs was held at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s headquarters in Pipeline and was attended by executive members and selected teacher coordinators of Drug Free Clubs.
“The launching of this club in schools is part of the Agency’s preventive mechanism geared towards keeping in school youth, children and drugs away from drugs. It also reinforces and support existing school outreach and sensitization programs targeting students and school administrations. In addition, setting up the club in schools will go a long way in educating and sensitizing students about the dangers and effects of drug abuse, illicit drug trafficking and related crimes and activities,” National Drug Law Enfacement Agency stated.
The National Drug Law Enfacement Agency added: “As part of the initiative in conjunction with the strategic plan, we will be organizing school outreach programs, capacity building programs on school-based drug prevention curriculum for the club membership, radio and television talk shows solely hosted, moderated and coordinated by students. Under the guidance of teacher coordinators, debate, quiz and drama competition among many other proposed programs and activities.
“We take this opportunity to call on Civil Society Organizations, international partners, private individuals and ventures to complement government efforts and partake in keeping youth, children and drugs apart. We cannot do it alone. A single institution and unit irrespective of the targeting strategy used cannot reach the entire population. Similarly, we call on them to support such ventures because the Agency cannot single handily fund or support all these initiatives and activities.
He went on that using the opportunity to extend invitation to any group or body that will want to partner with them in this noble initiative/venture. Special invitation is extended to sister clubs in schools including but not limited to NSGA- peer health, Peace Club, Red Cross etc,” it continued.
