Police have arrested and detained six young men suspected in the killing of a 20-year-old Senegalese man along the Palma Rima Beach.

Police said in a statement that “Following the armed robbery and subsequent death of a 20-year-old Senegalese national (Amat Touray) along the Palma Rima Beach on the 27/03/2022, rigorous investigation efforts by Kotu Police Station detectives uncovered evidence connecting a gang of six young men from Wellingara and Sinchu Baliya area.”

According to the Police, this followed an earlier report of the incident at Kanifing Estate Station by the victim’s friend who escorted him to the Serekunda General Hospital.

“The Kanifing police notified Kotu (station) who embarked on intensive probe that led to the arrest of one Momodou Lamin Dahaba of Sinchu Baliya. Upon interrogation, Dahaba confessed to be part of a gang that attacked the deceased on the day in question. He cooperated with police investigators and provided names of his gang mates.

“All those implicated were raided and arrested by the police and are currently helping them in their investigations. In the meantime, all six suspects have been indicted and remanded in prison. The general public is hereby advised to continue to be vigilant and close ranks with the police in combating crime for a better society,” Police added.

However, Police also said: “The University of the Gambia Student Union has awarded the police with certificates of appreciation for their timely and fruitful intervention in the last stalemate between the union and University administration.  Speaking during the awards ceremony held at the IGP’s office, Ousman Jassey, outgoing president of the University Student Union hailed the police for what he called a timely and reasonable intervention in bringing about peace and understanding between the UTG’s administration and the student body.

“Inspector General of Police, Abdoulie Sanyang underscored the importance of the award to the Police High Command, he said as an ex-student of the University himself, the award is dear to him and wants to assure his administration’s open-door policy to the student body. The IGP finally thanked the student body.
