A group of young people from Basse has written to President Adama Barrow urging him to reject different calls from those that are urging him to appoint a resident of the area as the next governor.
A group of Basse youth led by the vice chairman of the Basse Area Council, Yuba Jawara, has been advocating for the appointment of a native of the Upper River Region as Governor.
In a letter signed by Yusuf Tunkara the group stated in it that “We write with deep sense of dismay and regret to have read that the youth of URR demand the President of The Gambia that he should appoint citizens of URR in key government positions in URR. We want to clearly state that this is not the view of the youth of URR and will never be.
“We believe in giving equal opportunity to all and sundry irrespective of which part of the country you hail from once the person is competent to steer the affairs of the people of URR.
We the youth of URR condemn such bigotry statement in the strongest term possible and seek to distance ourselves from those so-called youth of URR. We the genuine youth of URR will never be part of such statement,” the letter written by Basse Eastern Province Union said.
