IAG Commemorates Insurance Awareness Week

The Insurance Association of The Gambia has commemorated its first Insurance Awareness Week which is meant to increase public awareness about insurance and its benefits, the commemoration was held at the Westfield Monument.

The theme for the celebration was “The Future of Insurance in The Gambia Perspective of the Regulators, Brokers and Insurers”

Makaireh Bajan, president of IAG said:” the insurance awareness week seeks to bring attention to the noble profession of insurance, to contribute and provide better understanding of the basic insurance, improve the public image of the industry and develop public interest in insurance to pave way for a more insurance responsive public.”

“Insurance is very important in the social economic of the country because it provides protection against misfortunes so we feel to sensitize people at all times,” he added.

However, the Secretary General of the Insurance Association, Molifa Sanneh, revealed that in 2020 the IAG paid over D98 million insurance claims and over D150 million in 2021. Adding the campaign serves as a platform for the public to engage insurance practitioners in a consultative forum to clear up any misconception about insurance or insurance policies.

He said “there are challenges as we speak we have so many things that are on the pipeline that they are pushing so that we can be independent that is the key. Because if you go to our sister countries like Ghana and Nigeria, they are autonomous they are independent but here is on the process.”

Momodou M Joof, Managing Director of the West Africa Takaful said the awareness week focus attention on creating improve public relations and offer the public the opportunity to be part of the educational activities from dynamic lectures and presentations on the various issues about insurance.

“Successful economy must be back by a successful insurance industry as insurance is the only business that guarantees all the other businesses that in terms of difficulties, we give them the necessary support to continue,” he said.
