Mbolo Association, a charitable organisation has launched an organic waste management project at the Albert market in Banjul that aimed at promoting circular economy in The Gambia.

This will help to control waste and collection of all the organic materials from the markets and transport to the gardens where they will be treated as a compose manure.

Speaking at the launch, Kena Jarra, Environmental Manager at the Albert Market, described the project as significance to the market vendors.

“All the vendors in this Albert market would be provided with a 10liter dustbin. These dustbins would be given to these women to dispose their waste materials, and it would help them to keep the market clean, and control waste in the market,” he said.

He pointed out that the women contribute to the project will go beyond just keeping the market clean but will also contribute in saving the environment for generations yet unborn.

“These women contribute to the global warming. They segregate waste and this waste is taking to the dumpsite and treats as manure for the gardeners. So, in segregating the waste they are helping the world and for the sustainable generation.

According to him, in order to keep the project alive and to be sure that vendors are properly disposing their waste, “every week we would be going to these markets to see whether they are segregating waste and if they are taking care of the buckets.

“The project is said to be working towards a sustainable Municipal Waste Management for the Metropolitan Area of the Greater Banjul. This project is a pilot project between the Greater Banjul Area municipality,  Brikama Area Council (BAC), Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), and Banjul City Council (BCC).”

He noted that the project started in Tujereng and it was called the “Tujereng Jambando,”
