GFF/CAF Pan African school football tournament kicks off

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) on Saturday launched the official kickoff of the CAF African School Football tournament.

The opening day matches played at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field in Old Yundum, featured five matches with 10 teams all in action in week one for both boys and girls running simultaneously.

Farafenni and Somita showed no mercy against powerless teams in Nema Kunku and WYCE with a 10-0 and 12-1 demolition against their opponents respectively whereas Brusubi collected the needed points from neighbors Sukuta in a 2-1 victory in the boys category.

The girls category featured two games with Kanifing East securing a 2-1 win in a scintillating encounter against opponents Mindaw whereas, Kanuma and Latrikunda German shared a point each after a goalless draw.

In the boys games played on Sunday, Brusubi defeated Sukuta 2-1; WYCE thrashed Somita 12-0; Nema Kunku were thumped 10-0 by Farafenni; New Covenant defeated Penyem; St. Martins were beating 4-0 by Babylon and Youna won Brikama 4-0 respectively.

Furthermore, in the girls category, St. Augustine drew 1-1 with Jersey Technical; Tumani Tenda were defeated 2-0 by ScanAid; Kanuma drew goalless against Latrikunda German and Kanifing beat Mindaw 2-1 respectively.

The opening day event was led by Alagie Nyassi, GFF Grassroots and School Football Coordinator who expressed delight over the day, describing the tournament as an important project for football development and sustainability in the country.

Hordes of fans graced the occasion to cheer their schools including members of the School Football Association, GFF and Regional Football Coordinators.
