KMC spends about D400,000 to collect wastes during festive periods in SK market

By Adama Makasuba

Modou Njie, Kanifing Municipal Council’s market manager, has said the council does spend more than three hundred thousand dalasis to collect wastes at Serrekunda market during festive periods.

“We do spend a lot of resources in cleaning the markets, especially during hawking periods of feasts. The minimum dalasi we spend during these periods in cleaning the markets is 300, 000 to 400,000 dalasis only for Serrekunda, because we have three shifts to clean the markets,” he revealed.

However, he dismissed false reports of waste dumping at the markets, adding “I am surprised about the issue of waste dumping in the markets.”

“When I saw it, I was terrified and the senior management called to find out solutions. My management and I toured the markets, but we couldn’t find any waste dumped in the markets. We clean the Serrekunda market on a daily basis. So, we dismissed this report and expressed our dismay about the entire report peddled on social media. This is not true at all.

“This is not true and is disheartening because if you look at the state of the markets now and before, you will realise that there is a huge improvement because the truck keeps collecting the wastes in the market. The wastes are not left to spend two days in the market. So, that report is false and unfounded,” he claimed.

“Yes, that’s true. There have been lots of stagnant waters in the Latrikunda market due to the blockage of the drainage which was supposed to be dislodged. So, the running rain waters from Sukuta end passed through Latrikunda,” he noted in his explanation.
