Ahmed Gitteh has shown his interest in contesting for the Brikama Area Council’s Chairmanship in the upcoming 2023 local government and council elections after resigning from his luxurious Canada Job.
The Gambia will head back to the polls coming 2023 to elect new mayors, chairmen, and councilors in the regions and councils in the country.
In an interview with The Voice, Gitteh said “I want this job because I felt West Coast as a region, is the biggest, it is the richest and it has a potential to not only take care of the needs of the region but the needs of the country as a whole.”
“Despite having those potentials, we are far behind in terms of revenue generation, in terms of infrastructure that will support those potentials it has. Because of that, I believe I have the expertise, I have the education, I have the energy, I have innovative ideas and I dare to lead that region to realise if not all, but to build the foundation to realise the potentials that the region has for its people,” he added.
He recapitulated that the region is far behind in terms of developments, adding that these problems have been there since independence.
“The problems of West Coast Region are way beyond just four years of SheriffoSonko. The problem of the West Coast Region has been there since 1965. There are problems that Sheriffo Sonko found that he, Sheriffo cannot solve. A lot of problems, there are environmental issues, taxes are being collected by the central government that I believe should be collected for the region,” he said.
“You all know there are no positions in this country, apart from certain professional positions, positions that are elective that I cannot run. There are none. My age mates are presidents the world over. My mates have become governors, and ministers and have also become big people in elected positions the world over. So, give your Brikama Area Council to me to manage it. Give it to me to fix it, give it to me to bring transparency there, give it to me to bring hard work there, give it to me to cut the head of corruption,” he said.
