Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda of Kanifing Municipal Council has revealed that his council has identified some schools and community centers to be used to temporarily shelter flood disaster victims.
Speaking to reporters he expressed concern over the downpour and extended his condolences to the affected families and individuals across the country, especially within the municipality.
He said his team has gone on for assessment to make sure affected families and individuals get relief support.
“We went around to see the rain floods disaster that happened for the past days in the country and we know KMC is settled around the rivers and its flooding route,” he said
“We have done the assessment and we have seen the disaster the what the downpour has caused to many families. We are still doing our assessments to make sure those people affected can have relief support from the council. And I have discussed with the vice president and the ministers of works and lands and environment,” he added.
According to him, the council has identified a temporary settlement for those seriously affected families and individuals after discussing with the ministry of basic and secondary education leadership and community centers within the municipality.
“We have identified a temporary settlement for those seriously affected families and individuals in our community centers and the minister of basic and secondary education has also said they have some schools which can be used by the disaster victims temporarily. We want to give shelter and food support to the disaster victims within the municipality.
“World Bank will sponsor NDMA-KMC and the ministry of the environment with almost 50 million dollars to construct the canal which stretches from Kotu to Abuko to dig it deeper and concrete it, and we expect that project will commence soon,” he disclosed.
