Students should focus more on their education than on televisions and mobile phones which could at some point be sources of distractions to students.
Today’s students are believed to be the potential future leaders of the Gambia, which calls for total concentration with a commitment to their education.
As Government has the responsibility to set up high standards of schools with support from teachers and Principals, students also have the responsibilities to show off to those schools, pay attention to those teachers, listen to their parents, and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.
The responsibility each student has for his or her education, every single student has something he or she is good at and has something to offer and has the responsibility to themselves to discover what that is, that is the opportunity an education can provide.
However, teachers have the responsibility for inspiring students to push them to learn and parents are responsible to keep them on track and get their homework done, not spending every waking hour in front of the TV.
But at the end of the day, if you get the most dedicated teachers and more supportive parents, the best schools in the world, none of it will make a difference, and none of it will matter unless students fulfil their individual responsibilities.
Quoting the former US President, Barack Obama, he says “No matter what you want to do with your life, you need the education to do it. If you want to be a nurse, an architect, a lawyer, or a member of the military, you going to need education for every single one of those careers.
You cannot drop out of school and drop into a good job. You have got to train for it, work for it and learn for it. You should not let your failure define you, but you have to let your failure teach you what to do differently the next time”.
However, the future of the Gambia depends on her students, what students are learning today in schools will determine whether we, as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.
The students need the knowledge and the problem-solving skills learned in science and mathematics to cure diseases.
