The Gambia Police National Central Bureau of Interpol have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Immigration Department that is centred on the extension of the INTERPOL I 1 24/7 tools to the GID.
According to the Police, the availability of these tools will equally help in combating irregular migration and better control of our land, Air and Sea borders.
Meanwhile, the agreement was signed during a three-day capacity-building training on Interpol policing capabilities related to international drug trafficking for officers drawn from GPF, GRA, GID, NDLEAG and officials from Forestry ends recently at the conference hall of the police headquarters.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Crime Management Coordinator of the Gambia Police Force, AIG Demba Sowe, emphasized the importance of the subject matter of the training, noting that the synergy came at a time when it’s needed most.
According to him, the Gambia Police Force had made tremendous strides recently through its National Bureau of Interpol and that building the capacities of its personnel in the area of international drug trafficking is a welcomed idea that will go a long way in changing the narratives.
He urged participants to fully take advantage of the training, and also share the knowledge and skills gained among their colleagues once they get back to their various formations.
The head of NCB Banjul who also doubles as Officer Commanding of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Gambia Police Force, Chief Superintendent Pa Alieu Jawara welcomed the Interpol trainers and disclosed that participants were all drawn from various units relevant to the national security and their exposure to the Interpol system will help in the day to day running of their various services to the nation.
