Musa Cham, the national assembly member for Serrekunda, has said he is working to import two more dialysis machines into the country in a bid to complement the government’s efforts in tackling kidney disease in the country.
The lawmaker was speaking during the donation of food items which include 25kg bags of rice, gallons of oil, and other foodstuffs to 80 flood victims in his constituency at the weekend.
“We have also given out wheelchairs and hospitals materials like bed and bedsheets, children’s toys and clothes. As we speak, we are expecting another container, and this time around we want to bring dialysis machines for people suffering from kidney disease.
“We have seen the machines at the EFSTH in Banjul that cannot satisfy the needs of the people. So, we are working to bring in two more machines to work with the government to help address the disease,” he said.
Meanwhile, he linked the floods in his constituency to the lack of waterways, adding that the available waterways are also blocked by waste materials and sand.
“So, this causes the problem when it rains. I have been rendering such supports, we have been importing materials to support people, some for the health centers and some even for people who are at their homes needing support,” he added.
Meanwhile, he urged the central government to include the local councils in their project implementation, adding that part of the councils’ problems is low budgets to implement such big projects.
“The central government should include the local councils in their project implementation because the councils live there with people. For issues like building roads. So, social accountability should be involved for transparency. The central government and the local governments should work together to develop and benefit the people,” he added.
