Haji Jawara, Gambian consular to Angola, has accused the Kanifing Municipal Council waste collectors of breach of contract which they reached in May to collect waste at his Pipeline residence monthly.
Speaking to reporters, Consular Jawara also accused the council’s waste collectors of charging him a higher tariff of money without providing receipts.
“In May before I left for Umrah I went to Bolong and told him I want to sign a contract with you to collect my waste, and he told me the big dust bin is D40. He said – ‘you can pay at the end of every month and he told me they will come to collect the waste every week, but it has been three weeks now that they haven’t come to collect the waste,” he said unhappily.
He went on in his explanation that “when I was in Saudi Arabia, I called them to go and collect the waste materials. Their staff came here and asked my wife to pay them D1,000 and my daughter gave them D700, afterwards, they came and demanded D500. I refused the third time and told them we agreed on D120 and when the month ends, I was supposed to pay D480.”
“When I came from Umrah I went to Bolong to tell him that the waste materials are too much and they should go collect it because it has been a month they haven’t collected the waste despite our contract. But they gave me a letter requesting me to pay D5000. And I asked for what reason?” he stated.
And continued that “from May to now, what we agreed on is that if the month ends, let them come to receive their money and today I went to pay D1000 but he told me to pay D5000. I, therefore, asked him where is the receipt of the D500 and D700 that your people collected from my family. I believe this is laziness and an attempt to disrespect Gambians. If they cannot do the work, let them go and allow other Gambians who want to do the job to do it,” he persisted.
However, KMC denied the D5000 charges claim but confirmed that the contract was a verbal one that was never put on paper.
