The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Women’s 1st Division League best eleven defeated Women’s 2nd Division League best eleven 1-0 in a friendly encounter played at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium on Monday
The friendly game was organised by Gam Women’s Football fans in collaboration with Scorpions TV.
The match was witnessed by high profile personalities, such as Sainabou Cham, president Women’s Football Association, Veronic Aisha Malack, GFF Assistant Women’s Football Coordinator and a host of dignitaries.
Red Scorpions striker Ola Buwaro scored the only goal in the game for the Women’s 1st Division League best players from a free-kick in the 38 minutes of the match.
Speaking to waiting reporters after the final whistle, Fakebba Saine, head coach of the first division best XI said it wasn’t bad, it’s a good performance despite the victory, adding that the dismal performance of his girls was due to lack of training.
“Coaching the women’s 1st division league best eleven means a lot to me. It is like coaching the national team because if you are to coach a national team, this is how the players will be selected.”
According to him, coaching such a team is a big boost to his coaching career, while thanking organisers Gam Women’s Football Fans and scorpions TV for the foresight.
“This kind of initiative can motivate and encourage both players and coaches,” he said.
For his part, Muhammed Sanyang, head coach of the women’s 2 division league best eleven praised her girls for the wonderful performance.
“We barely train together, knowing the level of women’s football first division league players. It surprised me seeing the second-tier players perform in such a way.”
He added that some people were expecting about three to four goals from the first division league players.
Coach Sanyang also went further to thanked Gam Women’s Football Fans and scorpions TV for single-handedly organising this game without any support, while appealing to all football lovers, NGO’s, philanthropies to support the two groups in helping the women players.
Meanwhile, certificates were awarded to all players including coaches who participated during the game.
