Leeds United football club was recently crowned champions of the Brikama Dasilameh Youths memorial tournament of the late Momodou Samateh after defeating Vikings Empire in a penalty shootout by 5 goals to 4 following a goalless draw in normal time.
Both teams had several chances but their chances were futile. However, Leeds United broke the dead luck by defeating their arch-rivals, Vikings Empire in a penalty shootout.
Leeds United was given a trophy and cash prize of D12, 000.00 (twelve thousand Dalasi) as winners while Vikings Empire was given D10, 000.00 (ten thousand Dalasi) as runners-up.
Mustapha Lahia, in an interview with The Voice Sports, described his victory as tears of joy, noting that it is his second time winning the trophy of the Brikama Dasilameh Youths Football League.
“I am hoping to win my third trophy in a row next year”, Mustapha Lahia noted.
For his part, Alieu Jatta, head coach of Vikings Empire said that he was denied a goal in the first minute of the game by the central referee.
“I dominated the game but my players failed to utilize their chances in the game”, Jatta noted.
However, the final of the late educationist, Mr. Momodou Samateh was marked by tributes from many people which include Alaodine Badjie, the chairman of Brikama Dasilameh Sports Association.
The late educationist, Momodou Samateh served as the principal of Bottrop Senior Secondary School and he contributed greatly to the Brikama community and The Gambia as a nation.
Fanta Bojang Samateh -Manneh, the ex-wife of Mr.Momodou Samateh thanked the Brikama Dasilameh Youths and Sports Committee for such an initiative while she lamented over the death of her ex-husband, saying it is a great loss for Brikama community and The Gambia at large.
