Still, the majority of Drivers are complaining about the price hike of fuel despite the Government reducing the pump price of fuel by D2 for every liter sold at the petrol stations.
Speaking to some of the drivers who have lamented the challenges they face on daily bases.
Cherno, a tuktuk driver said he has been in the service for 5years but what he experience this year is different compared to the past.
He said the most heartbreaking issue is that “we face a lot of challenges due to the traffic congestion and we even spend hours to reach our destinations.”
He added, that alone is a problem because a lot of fuel is used without any reason and that is a big loss to them as drivers.
“The customers think that drivers are adding to the price of fares at our own will, it is not our fault sometimes we also have to do that to earn something as we all know the current status of the country. This is the main reason why we always have a misunderstanding with the customers,” he explained tuktuk drivers’ daily experience with customers.
Nuha Jatta another driver also expressed his disappointment in the current poor state of the country this year “people suffer a lot but drivers are the main victims here as we cannot sit because we depend on hand to mouth.”
In his opinion, he said issues are getting worst every day and the people are beginning to lose hope, he called on the government to provide solutions and address the situation. He added that even if it is about the world crisis but it is the responsibility of the government to come up with strategies like other countries are doing.
The issue of the drivers’ strike last month hits the whole country so drivers should be empowered by solving their challenges as far as fuel is concerned.
He stated that now 10 liters is costing D750 and before 10 liters was D500 the gap is wide and looking at it there is no profit “it is like a waste of fuel.”
Muhammad Bah driver at the Bamboo garage also lamented the same issue.
