Opposition United Democracy Party (UDP) has slammed the recent video by a Senegalese Member of Parliament circulating on the social media as ‘a shame’ to the country’s Independent Electoral Commission, and the Supreme Court of the Gambia.
“The video circulation on the social media regarding the Senegalese National Assembly member, Mr. Oumar Cisse Souvane, complaining about Senegalese citizens acquiring Gambian national documents in the run-up to elections should be a shame for both the Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Supreme Court of the Gambia,” UDP said in a statement.
The statement the Opposition United Democratic obtained by The Voice expressed it total rejection of the December 4, 2021, presidential elections on the grounds of electoral malpractices, which included the registration of non-Gambian and the bribery by the incumbent party led by President Adama Barrow.
“We presented a petition to the Supreme Court of the Gambia wherein we outlined our grounds of rejection of the results but unfortunately that Court decided to rely on technicalities and subsequently dismissed our petition. Now the circulation of the video by a Senegalese member of parliament should be an embarrassment to the Supreme Court of the Gambia,’ the statement added.
This video released by the Senegalese Member of Parliament, according to the statement released by the party should be a great concern to the authorities by investigating the allegation to find out whether the Gambian national documents have been obtained by non-Gambian during the past presidential election in some parts of the country.
The party described the response of the Director General of Immigration as ‘poor and untenable.’
