Gambia sealed their place in the semi-finals of the WAFU A African School Football Championship after winning their groups in both the boys’ and girls’ categories of the competition underway in Cape Verde.
In the U-15 girls’ category, The Gambia defeated Guinea Conakry 2-1 before annihilating Senegal 7-0 in their second match of the day to win their group.
It’s the highest score registered by any team in any of the categories in the three-day international football tournament.
The Gambia boys defeated Guinea Bissau 4-0 in their second group match, following their earlier defeat of Mauritania 2-1 in the first game.
The Gambia boys and girls will play the runners-up of Group B today Tuesday for a place in Wednesday’s final. The boys’ and girls’ winners of the WAFU A competition will qualify for the final phase of the African School Football championship to be played in 2023.
The competition is a development project that focuses on schools’ football. It is organised through the African Schools Football Championship, which supports programs that increase the social impact of football and empower participating countries to administer football through training programs.
