After spreading like a bushfire, rumours of an attempted coup ON Wednesday suppressed following a dispatch from the Office of the Gambia Government Spokesperson.
Suppressed we say because the government’s press release about the reported failed coup did not make a majority of Gambians and residents of The Gambia any wiser.
After dilly-dallying with information about the reported attempted coup for nearly 24 hours, the government finally came out with its press release which is, without any denying, quite scanty in information about the alleged coup attempt.
Certainly, we appreciate the fact that time would be needed to burrow into the entire alleged scheme to be able to properly inform the population.
However the more time it takes the government to furnish the curious population with relevant facts about the alleged putsch, the wilder the rumours will grow.
Who are those soldiers arrested in connection with the reported coup?
Where and when have they been arrested?
What would have been their modus operandi?
In other words, how would the reported coup be executed?
Do they have any backers both within the country and without?
The AFPRC and APRC administrations did quite remarkable jobs in giving regular updates whenever they reported attempts on the lives of the administrations by men in uniform.
