The ScanAid Girls football team made history at the WAFU Zone A CAF Pan-African U15 Schools Football Championship in Cape Verde.
Gambia Football Federation officials, family members, and school officials received Girls and Boys football teams, which the girls achieved historic results in the WAFU Zone A CAF Pan-African U15 Schools Football Championship as Champions, while the country’s GFF president expressed delight.
President Lamin Kaba Bajo, GFF president who also debuted as president of WAFU Zone A expressed delight for presiding over the medal and award presentation to the Gambian teams.
He commended teams for a job well done as he described his presentation of trophies and medals as one of the great moments of his job.
President Bajo further commended the kids for upholding a high level of discipline throughout the tournament while reassuring them that the GFF will continue to partner with the school’s football association as it “will only grow from strength to strength.
He reaffirmed his administration’s position to get the right talents with the right ages from the schools, noting that they want to do away with age issues.
He noted the performance of the two schools showed to the world that, the country’s victories in the junior categories dating back to 2005 are not accidents but purely down to talents.
Speaking earlier, GFF executive committee member and President of the Schools Football Association, Mr. Ismaila Ceesay also thanked the GFF and described the federation as the brain behind the success. He further thanked the football leadership for the guidance and support since the start of the process leading to the sub-regional championship.
Mr. Ceesay advised the boys and girls including their teachers to continue their training in preparations for the Afcon Finals in Egypt 2023.
Scan Aid Girls are the Champions of the WAFU Zone A girls category and have booked a place in the continental in Egypt 2023 while New Yundum only missed out on penalty shootouts to Guinea in the final of the boy’s category.
The Gambia returned home with three other awards as New Yundum’s Alhagie Jarju was voted the leading goal scorer in the boy’s category with Five goals, Kaddy Camara of Scan Aid was the most valuable player in the Girl’s category and the Most Disciplined team of the championship went to New Yundum Upper Basic School.
