The ruling National People’s Party, NPP congress was marred by tension as the party elects a new executive that will steer the affairs of the party for the next five years.
After long hours of tension among senior members of the party, the party members finally elected Demba Sabally as deputy party leader and Suku Singhateh as 2nd deputy leader.
Mr. Singhateh who earlier vied for the position of deputy party leader was elected in absentia after he left the congress and was persuaded to give up the position for Mr. Sabally.
In another dramatic twist, Essa Dampha was also persuaded to withdraw his candidature for the position of deputy spokesperson for Seedy Njie who has been holding the position since the inception of the party in 2019. Intense argument and dissatisfaction were reported at the congress prompting the Secretary-General and Leader of the party, President Adama Barrow to rush to the congress to address differences before announcing the results.
The Voice has confirmed that both Essa Dampha and Suku Singhateh angrily left the congress before the election because they were not happy with the president’s interference in the process. The Voice will bring the full details of the congress and names of executive members tomorrow.
