By: Ebrima Mbaye

Kanifing Municipal Council’s anti-littering Unit has urged Gambians to desist from their manners towards indiscriminating littering of streets in the municipality as the unit head frowned against indiscriminate dumping.

In an interview with Lamin Camara, the Manager of the anti-littering unit, Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC) annex office, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the public’s attitude toward random littering on streets.

“We faced a lot of challenges in terms of littering, among which are the inadequate public support on their work, enforcement of bye-laws and the indiscriminate dumping on streets,” he said.

Mr. Camara, therefore, urged Gambians to join hands with authorities responsible to end indiscriminate and irregular street littering in KMC and Gambia at large.

Musa Dampha, a staff at the KMC littering unit also expressed his concerns about irregular littering on streets within the vicinity of KMC. “We stationed trash beans at the junctions to enable people to put all trash there but some people dump anywhere and this is not helping,” he stressed.

On her part, Fatoumatta Binta Jallow, a groundnut seller at the Westfield also expressed her disappointment with street littering saying “I sweep here every day before I go home but I always found it dirty with plastic bags and papers the next morning. Adding that, KMC littering Unit is doing tremendously well to put a stop to street littering but the people are the problem.”
