Groundnut farmers in the North Bank Region have hailed the government for the availability of cash at all buying points for the 2022 trade season, unlike the past six years when farmers faced difficulty to receive their cash on time.

Bagal Bah President of Njawara groundnut buying point locally called  ‘secco’ said the opening of this year’s season by the Gambia Groundnut Cooperation  (GGC) has created market outlet for farmers with 25tons so far purchased from farmers from thirteen villages in Lower Baddibou.

He noted that the visit by Muhammed Njie, the Director General of GGC to the buying points demonstrated government and Cooperation commitment to assess the level of groundnut season and map out a plan to support farmers with fertilizers and other farm inputs.

Samba Sallah the President of Kuntair, SulaymanJammeh Secretary of Chilla, and FodayGasama Agent for AGIB described the season as promising as most of the centres have produced a large number of tons, unlike previous years.

“All the seccos have enough cash and there is no credit buying. Farmers are looking for an increment of groundnut price, as this will bridge the gap between private dealers and GGC,” they told this medium.

The management of the groundnut buying points however appealed to the GGC and the government to supply fertilizers on time to revise the cost and make it more affordable.
