Amie Jobe, Migration Activist and Founder of Safe Home for Migration Association (SaHMA), said the level of women migration in the Gambia is increasing on the increase as many women leave the country for greener pastures in the Middle East.
In an interview with The Voice, Madam Jobe explained some of the challenges that these women go through such as torture, and trauma in a country where they don’t know amid frustration and false promises.
“They go through domestic violence because we all know domestic violence is also associated with migration and sexual harassment, so these and many other things these women face in those Arab countries,” she noted.
She disclosed that the destination countries for most of these young women are Dubai, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Oman and recently most of them are traveling to Turkey.
However, she added there is much to be done in assisting these migrants because these migrants need enough support to integrate into society, adding that there is a need for government to do more efforts in order to improve and protect the identity of these women.
According to her, there are a lot of returnees and activists who are doing a lot of awareness creation on the issue of migration but despite that, there are a lot of challenges in terms of the level of awareness.
She suggested that the Government needs to create job opportunities for young women to deter them from going to this country in search of jobs, while also advising young girls to stop accepting such offers from these Arab countries to avoid being victims.
