Kombo North Scouts recently embarked on a two-day capacity-building training exercise for over 60 scout members including their leaders from different communities.
The training was held in Kombo North under the theme – Gender Equality.
The workshop aims to help young people of the district to achieve and develop full physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual potential so that they are empowered to be responsible, active global citizens in diversity and inclusion.
Momodou Kuyateh, the Project Coordinator for the “Scouts for Gender Equality,” during the training said, “this project initiative on Gender Equality under the umbrella of Diversity and Inclusion will soon meet the Sustainable Development Goal in ensuring a Gender equality district, make communities and human settlements in the district inclusive is to ensure that all girls and boys have early childhood development in gender equality.”
Scouting, according to him, will help to provide urgent actions to combat all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere in the district and eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.
Speaking on behalf of the District Scout Commissioner of Kombo North, Muhammed Fofana said Scouting in Kombo North is providing young people with opportunities to participate in programs, events, activities, and projects that contribute to their growth as active citizens.
“It is of great importance that Scouts have all the tools they need to stand together to create a bold and visible force for gender equality. It is essential that at all levels we address these topics within our educational programs and activities.”
Omar Jarju, the International Commissioner of Gambia Scout emphasized that scout groups in Kombo South have already started advocating for inclusion and diversity in the association and creating experiences that help youths better understand the importance of diversity and inclusion in addressing gender inequalities within their communities.
He added that there is a need to build a team of passionate, dedicated volunteers who will champion the Scouts for Gender Equality and continue to serve as support, guidance, and a network for other Scouts.
