The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has on Tuesday after the tragic historic earthquakes that occurred in Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, and Egypt confirmed the involvement of a few Gambians affected by the earthquakes
Reaching out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the tragic incident, the Director of Diaspora and Migration, Musa Camara, said that based on the information received from The Gambian Embassy in Turkey, 3 Gambians were involved in the earthquake.
Director Camara noted that those involve were two students and one international expert working for UNICEF. Adding that, they are all ok as officials of the Embassy confirmed having spoken to them on Tuesday morning.
When asked about Syria, Lebanon, and other countries, he said they are yet to receive information from those countries on the involvement of any Gambians in the incident as it occurred there, too.
According to the information shared on ALJAZEERA on the 6th of February, “Powerful earthquakes and aftershocks killed thousands of people and injured thousands more in Turkey and Syria, triggering frantic searches for survivors in the rubble of collapsed buildings.”
“An initial magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit near the southeastern of the Turkish city of Gaziantep at 4:17 a.m. on Monday when people were sleeping, at depth of about 17.9km. It was also felt as far as Cyprus, Egypt, and Lebanon. Dozens of aftershocks followed, with a powerful 7.6 earthquake striking the Elbistan region of Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province at 10:24 GMT.”
