Omar Sanyang admonishes youth to take up leadership position

By: Ebrima Mbaye

Omar Revolutionist Sanyang, a third-year political science student at the University of The Gambia (UTG) and aspiring PDOIS candidate for Somita Ward has said it’s about time Gambian Youths should take the leadership throne of this country.

In an interview with The Voice newspaper, he said the reason he has chosen to contest in the forthcoming local government elections is that he didn’t believe that youths are the future leaders instead he believes youths are the leaders of today “because Youths should not wait till they are old before taking up responsibility.”

“I have the capacity and ability to serve my people. I have all it takes to be the councilor in my ward considering my educational background and the positions that I had been manning. Most importantly, my involvement in community development projects. All this is evident that I’m indeed competent to contest for the councilorship of Somita Ward” he told this medium.

Omar explained that the current situation that the Youths are facing in their ward is clear to him and it will be very easy for him to overcome those problems, noting Somita Ward lacks a ward development committee which is key in community development because without community development many problems will not be known.

He, therefore, assured that if the people of Somita Ward vote him into office his primary step will be to establish a ward development committee to work with the village development committees (VDCs) and influential youths for a better ward.

Meanwhile, he said it’s unfortunate that counselors in this country don’t know their functions, adding that the primary responsibility of a ward councilor is to represent their people at the area council level in the best interest of their people.

Mr. Sanyang stressed that 60% of the taxpayers’ money for the ward should be brought back to the ward for development but he said this can’t be brought because the people who voted are not competent and don’t know what they are supposed to do.

The aspiring ward councilor ended by calling on Gambian Youths to start taking up responsibilities and vote based on competence and not tribal sentiments.
