President Barrow advised representatives of the University of The Gambia- UTG Students’ Union to focus on their education to gain the authorities’ confidence.
He said the government is tirelessly working to create space at Faraba Campus to decongest the current situation and assured them of the political will to support education. He made the remarks during an audience with the Executive of UTG Students ‘Union at the State House on 22nd March 2023.
Responding to their challenges, President Barrow said that the government already provides scholarships to many students but pledged that the government would look into their concerns. He reiterated the government’s policy to close the skills gap through TVET education, decrying that non-Gambians occupy over 75% of skilled jobs. He further emphasised the important role of the private sector in creating jobs, as government can only provide limited job opportunities. President Barrow stressed, “With skills, you can create jobs for yourself and others.” He pledged to support them but encouraged them to explore innovative means of funding their activities.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the President of the Student’s Union, Mr Kemo Conteh, informed the Gambian leader that they represent over seven thousand seven hundred (7700) students and their concerns ranged from students with arrears barring them from registering for their courses, the annual Student’s Week, mobility and internship opportunities. He thanked the President and his government for the support already provided to students from scholarships, logistics and enhancing the learning environment with the new campus at Faraba Banta
