Principal Magistrate Muhammed Krubally of Banjul Magistrates’ Court, Thursday, sentenced Bakary Sarr, the Transport Manager of the Judiciary to seven years and six months imprisonment on a three counts offence, obtaining money by pretense through land traction with three parties.
Bakary Sarr pleaded guilty to the three counts of offence charged him with but later changed his plea which led to the commencement of the prosecution.
Bakary Sarr, according to Inspector Nfamara Saidykan, promised to sell 20 X 20 plots of land to Abou Sumareh, Muhammedou Samusa, and Mahammed Sumareh at Sukuta Village on behalf of the Sheriff Division but he failed.
”Abou Sumareh and Muhammedou Samusa have suffered a loss of five hundred thousand Dalasi (D500,000) each together with Mahammed Sumareh who gave the convict (Bakary Sarr) a sum of four hundred thousand and fifty dalasi (D450,000) since 2019 this man has been promising but failed,” he explained.
The police prosecutor Nfamara Saidykan applied for compensation from the convict to the victims in the same amount they have paid him saying they have suffered a lot at the hand of the convict, Bakary Sarr,
However, the convict, Bakary Sarr, pleaded for mercy saying ‘’Your Worship, I am currently serving a two years jail term at Mile II Central Prison, ordered by Her Lordship I. Janneh.
“I am begging for mercy from the court, for the judgments passed on me simultaneously. I lost my mom and younger brother while in prison coupled with my daily responsibility to my children who are entirely depending on me,‘’
Before his sentence, Magistrate Muhammed Krubally declared that Bakary Sarr shall pay a fine instead of imposing a custodial sentence on him.
“I hereby ordered Bakary Sarr to pay a fine of D5000 on count 1, D5000 on count 2, and D5000 on count 3 in default to serve six months imprisonment on each count and he shall compensate Abou Sumareh and Muhammedou Samusa D500,000 each in default to serve four years imprisonment and he shall compensate Mahammed Sumareh with D450,000 in default to serve two years imprisonment, all sentence shall run concurrently,” he ruled.
