Wednesday, May 3 was observed in The Gambia and around the World Press Freedom Day
This year’s theme as defined by UNESCO is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights”.
Today in The Gambia, media freedom, the safety of journalists, and freedom of expression are increasingly under free which supports the fulfillment of other human rights.
We use the occasion to congratulate Gambian practitioners for their tireless efforts in upholding the principles of press freedom and for their dedication to informing the public and holding those in power accountable.
The media’s work in The Gambia is critical to the functioning of our democracy and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate and reliable information.
We urge all to continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism-including accuracy, fairness and impartiality-and also embrace innovation to adapt to the fast-changing Gambia media landscape.
The future of media is user-centered, demand-driven, and interest-based. Happy World Press Freedom Day!
