by Mustapha S Koli

A delegation from The Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) on Tuesday 16th May 2023 paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare in Kanifing.

The purpose of their visit was to collaborate and partner with the ministry in the area of resource mobilization and content management on women empowerment and children with special needs amongst others.

Saikou K Sanyang, The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare welcome the team and assured them of the ministry’s unflinching support towards the success of their mission.

He also dilated on the numerous projects and programs being implemented by the Ministry including the Women Enterprise Fund. He added that the Ministry is rapidly progressing but its interventions are under-reported and therefore the need to popularize and display their interventions.

Fatou Sanneh-Ceesay, Director of TV Programs posited that since the inception of GRTS, we have set up a gender unit that is designed to amplify and popularize content on women, children, and vulnerable groups.

We want to equip the gender unit with the requisite tools that will further popularize the activities and mandate of the unit.

To promote Gender sensitive Radio and Television programming, the Gender Unit of GRTS needs equipment citing the emergence of numerous Communication Institutions competing for quality in an already saturated market

This she added, prompted their mission to seek an audience with the ministry to facilitate discussions and the possible signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to promote a partnership between the two institutions to fulfill the missions and visions of the state broadcaster with support from the Ministry of Gender, through their diverse partners.

Kemo Jatta, Director of Marketing at GRTS noted that we have a series of programs earmarked on promoting the welfare of children and women in the country. We need collaboration and partnership with the ministry on sponsors on content management

Kajali Sonko DPS Technical, DPS Technical, and MOGCSW pointed out that, this engagement could not be timelier than now as they are currently considering working on a rolling-out documentary for the Ministry.

This documentary, he added, intends to highlight and display the five years of outstanding achievements registered by the Ministry since its establishment in 2019.  This will require working with GRTS and developing content on the special needs of children and persons with disabilities.
