Officials from the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources, and National Assembly matters with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Tuesday 29th May 2023, began a nationwide tour of communities identified for the new Climate Resilient Fisheries for Livelihood Improvement in The Gambia (PROREFISH Gambia).
The team headed by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries, Rohiyatou Kah and Sirah Njie of FAO, yesterday, Wednesday, visited landing sites in the Greater Banjul Area.
Rohiyatou Kah, the Permanent Secretary told respective communities in the Greater Banjul Area that the government of The Gambia through her ministry is very much concerned about the welfare of Gambians, particularly women.
She pointed out that the new project has come to address and improve the fishing sector with the latest innovation. “For me as a woman, I am happy that this project is here to uplift lives and livelihood of women,” the PS said.
Sira Njie from FAO reminded the beneficiary communities that the PROREFISH Gambia project was developed in consultation with them while assuring them that FAO would ensure that the project is fully implemented.
Madam Njie pointed out that the PROREFISH Gambia project aims at reducing the high exposure and vulnerability of artisanal fisheries infrastructure, supporting the development of aquaculture, and restoring degraded mangroves among other things.
The tour will continue to other beneficiary communities in the hinterland.
