Lamin K Fatty, the Executive Director of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled has kicked against the habit of mistreatment of persons with disability at their place of work.

He said no disabled employee should be treated badly because of his or her disability nature in any working place.

Speaking to this reporter, he said “No person with a disability should be treated unfairly because of his or her condition. We are sending this information to all employers and there should be proper monitoring from the government, that’s the Department of Labor because they need to regulate their system to eradicate the exploitation of employees in this country.”

He added that there are a lot of persons with disabilities who are working without any contract agreement but just based on a verbal agreement with their employers. This is affecting mostly those deaf and hard of hearing and the federation is receiving complaints on that.

“I am aware of some of the employers who are going on trials at the court level for exploiting disabled persons at their institutions. But the Department of Labor needs to be doing more monitoring on that,” said the executive director.

He noted that they have been organizing training and sensitizing disabled persons on issues of forced labor hence it is not normal and it is against their rights, while also letting them know what the legislation says about it.
