Hon Sulayman Jammeh, National Assembly Member for BundungkaKunda Constituency has tasked the Government to always give road projects to serious contractors.
In an exclusive with this medium over the weekend, Hon. Jammeh said “You may have a contractor but sometimes these contractors don’t have the human and material resources available to implement some of these road projects. Sometimes the contractors would be given different road projects that they can’t execute at the same time which has made some delay in most of the projects.”
Jammeh cited his constituency road project as an example which commenced last year in October and up to date, the works of the road construction are not going as expected or agreed, “likewise, other parts of the Greater Banjul Area.”
He said the Minister should come on board to see whether to cover the hole on the Bundung highway till after the rainy season, hence if it rains now, it would be worse in the area than last year.
“This is why I said the government has to give the project to serious people, serious contractors who have the capacity and at least the required resources available to be able to implement and fast track the project,” he stressed.
According to him, most road constructions are very slow and at the same time, the way and manner the projects are going in terms of the potential stakeholders that should be involved, delay the whole process, in terms of capacity and material resources.
He pointed out that these are projects that are costly and the moment there is a delay, there is going to be an extra cost so to avoid that, “the government should start screening the contractors to know who is capable to give contracts.”
“Road construction is expensive and a big time investment for the government. So, there is a need to be serious about it and ensure that genuine and committed contractors with the required resources are given the contracts,” he added.
