South Sudan will on Wednesday play their 2023 AFCON qualifier Group G home game against Gambia in Ismailia, Egypt. These two occupy the bottom slots in the group with South Sudan at the foot with three points. A win by two clear goals will list the hosts from the bottom of the standings. A loss will however end their slim chances of qualification. South Sudan’s last outing ended in a 1-0 home loss to Congo, the same team they had beaten 2-1 away. They come into this game with three losses and two wins in five matches. South Sudan have failed to score in two of their last four matches while they’ve lost three of four home games. Playing in Egypt, South Sudan will not enjoy much in the form of home support either. This will curtail their hopes of overturning the 1-0 away loss to Gambia.
With the two group leaders facing off, Gambia will look at this as a good opportunity to rise into second spot. They have six points, tying with second placed Congo, who host Mali. Gambia managed a 1-0 win over South Sudan in their earlier meeting and will seek to complete a double here. They come into this game straight from a key win over Mali, and they’ll be very confident in this. That win over Mali ended a run of two straight losses and it was their second in four matches. In their last 10 AFCON qualification matches, Gambia have posted five wins. They have failed to score in just three of the last 10 AFCON qualification matches. Two wins only in their last 10 away matches in AFCON qualification matches isn’t a great run.
