Drivers’ licences not extend to 5 years – MoI

The Ministry of Interior on Saturday, 24th June 2023 issued a press release to clarify issues on the driver’s licence validity saying the Minister of Interior never announced an extension of drivers’ licences to 5 years.

The full press release read as follows that the “Ministry of Interior wishes to clarify that contrary to reports in sections of the media, the Minister of Interior never announced the extension of drivers’ licences to 5 years and no official statement has ever been issued to that effect.

“Indeed, there was a parliamentary question on the validity of drivers’ licences to which the Honourable Minister of Interior responded accordingly. When subsequently asked about the possibility of extending licence validity to 5 years, the Minister told National Assembly Members that his Ministry was discussing the idea with stakeholders.”

And that “The current licencing regime was approved by the National Assembly and the Ministry of Interior remains committed to progressive reforms for the benefit of Gambians and residents of the country,” the statement concluded.
